Mohuee Addin Al-Arqan and Mahmoud Subaih

Both of Mohuee Addin Al-Arqan and Mahmoud Subaih received training in furniture upholstery through their participation in “Empowerment” project, implemented by Irada program, implemented by Irada program, funded by the Islamic Development Bank and sponsored by the United Nations Development Program.

Mohuee, 24, is a resident of Al-Zayton neighborhood in eastern Gaza, and he, his wife and their son share his family’s four-room house. Muhee’s family lives in one room of the four, and the remaining rooms are home to the 17 other family siblings.

Suffering from a physical and visual disability, Muhee was always disqualified from competing for employment because of his atrophy of muscles and weak eyesight. When he thought of starting his own business, he could not find enough resources to do so.

Mahmoud, on the other hand, is a resident of Jabalia in northern Gaza, and he suffers from a disability caused by shrapnel. Prior to his participation in the project, Mahmoud could not afford engagement and marriage expenses; however, he, along with Mohuee, has now started his own upholstery business, which was a reliable source of independent outcome.

When “Empowerment” project, aiming to train and improve the job access of people with disability, was announced, Mohuee and Mahmoud applied and chose to be trained on furniture upholstery. Following their outstanding performance through training, they were qualified for the second phase which supports the establishment of private businesses to excellent trainees. The necessary equipment was purchased, and both Mahmoud and Mohee have since been running their business successfully.

Now, they do not rely on any form of charity but are financially independent and can fully provide for their families.
